Yorkshire Terriers – Little Dogs of Huge Value

The Yorkshire Terrier is a popular small companion dog. Often nicknamed Yorkie, it is an intelligent and active breed with the heart of a warrior, but needing attention and care.

Origin

Yorkshire Terrier dogs first appeared in the middle of the 19th century in Yorkshire, Northern England. The breed was developed by Scottish wavers who brought along various terriers which they used to hunt rats. At first, Yorkies were treated as working dogs, but their beauty was soon appreciated by breeders. They quickly became popular pets and show dogs not only in England, but in all of Europe. The first Yorkshire Terrier dogs appeared in the United States in 1872, and the breed has been popular there ever since.

Appearance

Yorkshire Terriers dogs are small; full-grown dogs weigh only up to 7 pounds. They have long glossed silky coats, usually tan combined with steel blue. The less popular combinations of colors include blue and gold, black and tan, and black and gold. Interestingly, the puppies are born black and may take months or even years before getting their adult coats. Their ears are small and covered with short fur. Tails used to be docked, but nowadays are often left long.

Personality

If you are looking for a small indoor dog, Yorkshire Terrier dogs have many advantages. They are affectionate and loyal, but often do not get on well with young children. Even though they are small, they are not timid. They make good watchdogs and can alert the family if strangers are getting near. Being terriers, they are hunters at heart and may be aggressive, so it is better not to leave them unattended with smaller pets.

Care

When Yorkshire Terriers are kept healthy, their life expectancy exceeds 15 years. Their hair should be brushed on a daily basis, trimmed regularly, and they should be bathed once a month. Yorkies can keep fit even in a small apartment, however they need some opportunity to exercise during an everyday walk. Being intelligent dogs, they are easy to train.
