There are many different drill bits that are perfect for your needs. If you’re anything like me then you might not know the difference between all of them and which one would be best for the task you are trying to achieve. Drill bits come in all different shapes and sizes, here are a list of drill bits, materials, and different design types.
Drill Bit Materials
There are three main type of materials used for drill bits, which are high speed steal, cobalt, and carbide. High-speed steal is the most popular material, it is great for your simple and easy projects that involve wood, plastic, or soft steel. It is great for someone who is new to using a drill. The cobalt drill bit is made with up to 5-8% of cobalt material in it. With the cobalt included it makes this material a step up from the high-speed drill bit. This material is great when you have projects that you will be working with stainless steel and any kind of harder steel. The last types of material is carbide and it is great for professional use. This carbide is probably best used by professionals, this drill bit is designed for the hardest types of materials. It is also made from the hardest and high quality material and should not be used in hand drills or drill presses. Even though this material is the hardest its also the most brittle.
Design Features
Drill point angle and length are important when handling a drill. If you are a beginner you should go with the standard angle and length which is 118 degrees and a shorter drill length. Using a shorter drill bit are more accurate and do not break as easily, this is because they are more rigid. They are also really beneficial to a person working in a tight and confined spaces. If you are looking for a drill angle that will drill in to stainless steal material at a faster rate, a drill with a 135 degree angle would be perfect for your task.
Drill Point coatings
Coating on your drill can change the way that your project looks. Just like the drill bit material and the drill bit design features, the coat that goes on the drill also plays a big role. The types of coats that can be found on a drill bit are Black Oxide, Bright,Tin, and Ticn. Black oxide reduces the friction, and it is not for nonferrous materials. It will also increase the chip flow. Bright will give you a polished finish. It is great to use for plastics, woods and aluminum. Another type of coat is Tin, this coat is gold and it runs faster than the uncoated drills. It is also more durable than the other coats. The last type is TiCN and it is a blueish gray color, it is perfect for projects that have stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. This coating is made of a nickel material which makes it harder and last longer than the others.
There are a wide variety of drill bits for you to choose from depending on what job you are trying to get done. Picking the right drill bit for you can be crucial to how your project will turn out.
